Oral Infection
Stacks Image 138

The most common oral infection in the population is periodontal disease, which is the infection, caused by bacteria, and inflammation on the tooth surrounding tissues (gums, periodontal fibers and bone). In general, the signs of periodontal disease are bleeding gums, bad breath, usually with the presence of heavy plaque and tartar (In the late stages of the disease, tooth mobility and tooth loss). The key factor is that other than those signs, there is usually no pain, so it is very common that people that does not go to regular dental visits, go for months and years having the disease and not really knowing it, are living with a chronic periodontitis.

These periodontal pathogens have a local and systemic effect on the inflammatory response. Patients with oral inflammation are very likely to have high levels of certain inflammatory mediators. These mediators all play important roles in the biochemical chain of events responsible for inflammation and, as inflammation progresses; they promote the production of C-reactive protein (CRP). Those elevated levels of CRP have correlations in systemic disease such as diabetes mellitus and, especially, cardiovascular disease.

However, other potential pathways to systemic disease have been identified.

There is some evidence that antibodies specific to Porphyromonas Gingivalis have been found in athereosclerotic plaques –also called atheromas –are yellowish deposits consisting primarily of cholesterol and other lipid material that build up arteries.

The bacteria from the periodontal pockets may enter the blood system and contribute to the atherogenesis.

The spread of oral microorganisms and their toxins have been implicated in cardiovascular diseases including heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, and atherosclerosis, arthritis, implant infections, brain abscesses, hematological infections, and pre-term and low birth weight infants.
